I am a regular visitor to Axminster and although I like your town very much, what I saw today has upset me so much that I felt moved to join your website so that I could post about it.
I was in the Trinity store, upstairs looking at the bed linen when up came two women, one of whom walked with a stick and was clearly leaning heavily upon it. I was surprised they hadn't used the lift but it soon became apparent why.
The older, disabled lady pointed out - quite reasonably - to the assistant that the lift door was stuck open and did she know. The assistant was very rude, replying something like "You should have asked if you wanted it." I thought that perhaps an apology and an offer to get the lift working for the woman to use it to descend would have been much more appropriate.
The two women left and the assistant went after them. By the time I exited, the assistant was shouting loudly at the women by the cash desk in what I can only describe as a most aggressive and inappropriate manner. I am guessing that the disabled woman said something about the lift being out of use and the shop assistant took offence in a most disproportionate way. Another gentleman (the manager?) was there but the assistant was shouting over him too. The two women left upset and bewildered.
Is this how you treat disabled people in Axminster? Please tell me it is not. I have an elderly, disabled parent myself and quite frankly I was horrified at what I witnessed. Shop assistants are there to serve - what happened to the customer is always right along with treating people with courtesy and respect?
I will not be visiting the Trinity shop again any time soon and would suggest that until they have a policy about the way they speak to customers - disabled and able bodied alike - it is buyer beware. I would be very interested in knowing if anyone else has had a similar experience there.
